Palliative Care and Hospice Care are commonly misunderstood patient care services, and without clear understanding of what each entails, delay in electing such vital patient care services may result in poor patient care outcomes. The purpose of this module is to inform participants on the comparisons and contrasts between the two services, when one or both are applicable to patient care, and how to help patients make informed decisions on their care. Some nurses and other providers may have the knowledge but lack the skills needed to communicate sensitive information with patients regarding palliative or hospice care and this module provides the strategies needed to have such conversations with patients and their families.
Session objectives:
- Explain the difference between hospice and palliative care
- Identify at least two situations in which palliative care is recommended
- Describe the correct time to discuss palliative care with patients
- State two communication techniques that can be used when discussing palliative care
- Describe at least two limitations of palliative care
Successful completion of learning activity:
Participants who view the recorded voice-over PowerPoint presentation in its entirety, complete the evaluation form, and pass the post-test with 80% or higher will receive an electronic certificate via email. RNs completing the activity will receive 1.0 contact hours of continuing education.
