Nurses and other health care professionals are not immune to workplace violence and the COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated the level or prevalence of workplace violence directed at health care workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), defines workplace violence as an act or threat of violence, ranging from verbal abuse to physical assaults, or any other disruptive behavior, including domestic violence and stalking when it impacts the workplace. Nurses and other health care professionals have been subjected to workplace violence by patients or other family members longer than the recent pandemic due to lack of workplace and legislative policies that protects health care workers. This education activity is intended to equip nurses and other health care professionals with knowledge they can use to guide policy development pertaining to workplace violence prevention in their own practice settings.
