Lead to Inspire – Fight to Win

Join National Nurses United to discuss how overcoming fear, and moving from inaction to action, changes us, empowers us, and moves us to the next level of political commitment. We’ll look at several successful issue-based campaigns, how nurses were affected by the campaign, and what made them commit to the next level of action. Participants should bring examples from their own units where they’ve successfully addressed issues and seen coworkers empowered, or where they’ve been unable to get commitment from other nurses to take action, despite a fight-back plan being in their best interest. We’ll also look at how internal structure or systems that provide unity and direction are key to moving members, and how to implement, alter or enhance those structures on your unit and in your hospital. We’ll discuss how to inspire your coworkers, and how to lead inclusively to enhance collective power rather than undermine it.

Presenters

Erin FitzGerald is NNU’s Director of Special Projects. She has been with NNU since its inception – primarily as a field organizer, working with nurse leadership and fighting to win. She believes nurses have an important role to play in the labor movement because of their advocacy and their connection to their patients and their communities. She also has a background in messaging and communications, is a visual artist, filmmaker and writer, and wields these tools whenever possible to stand with workers and fight corporate greed.

Pete Castelli has been a community organizer and in the labor movement for over 30 years, He started in the south as an organizer with The textile and garment workers Union,  ACTWU, He was also Executive Director of the largest SEIU Public sector Local in northern California. Pete has been with NNU/NNOC/CNA for over 12 years and has been the Catholic Division Director, the first Public Sector Division Director for CNA and Now is National Director of the Affiliates and Strategic Campaigns Department for NNU. He has bargained many contracts, led many strikes.
